35th Annual Carving Show - March 26-27, 2011

Ron Bymers - Featured Carver - Ron Bymers was recognized as the featured carver at the 2011 Rochester Woodcarvers annual show held March 26-27, 2011. Ron began carving in 1988 after meeting George Jones, a local wood carving instructor who influenced many current wood carvers. Now as an experienced hobbyist, Ron says wood carving is very satisfying because it gives him the opportunity to display his artistic talents in wood with his own hands. While Ron has completed carvings in many different styles including relief and chip, realistic and caricature carvings, especially of people are his favorite. Ron’s family and friends have been the lucky recipients of many wood carved items over the years. He had many examples of his carvings on display at the show. Ron became a Rochester Woodcarvers club member in 1988 and has served the club in a variety of leadership and support positions.

Raffle carvings - The Rochester Woodcarvers Annual Show offers free admission and no table fees for our exhibitors. Our exhibitors donate carvings to the club for use in a raffle that generates income to pay for our event expenses. Each year, our carvers "raise the bar" for the quality, variety, and "wantability" of the items. Our visitors (and many club members) buy raffle tickets on the chance they will be a lucky winner and take home their favorite carving.

People's choice carvings - Visitors to the Rochester Woodcarvers show can review a selected set of carvings and vote for their top three favorites. Carvings are returned to the owners at the end of the show. 1st place was awarded to Ben Manor for his "Mountain Magic Elk", 2nd place to Russ Scott for his "Cowboy and Horse", and 3rd place went to Terry Johnson for his "Cabin in the Woods". Look for photos of these carvings to be on next year's show advertising!

Candid photos from the show - Wayne Hendrickson has been taking our "candid" photos of the show for several years. His collection of photographs document the wide variety of carvings on display as well as the exhibitors and visitors at the show. Thanks Wayne! Your efforts preserve great memories of our events!

Elinor Lamb - Featured Carver
- Elinor Lamb was selected by the club officers as the 2010 Featured Carver. Elinor began carving in 1979 after visiting a woodcarving museum and learning about what could be done with wood. While she started carving birds, Elinor has ventured into several different styles of carving including realistic figures, caricature, chip, and relief. To give back to her community, Elinor taught community education classes in southeastern Minnesota, sharing her knowledge and skills with other aspiring carvers. As featured carver, Elinor displayed several completed carvings throughout the show.

Raffle carvings - The 2010 Rochester Woodcarvers show was supported by very generous carvers offering their work to the club and those visitors and carvers buying raffle tickets. The raffle generates the revenue we need to offer free admission to the show - so no one will feel they cannot attend. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year's show a success!

People's choice carvings - Rochester Woodcarvers Show visitors can vote for their favorite "People's Choice" carving at the show. The top three vote getters are selected to highlight the next year's show in advertising and other publicity. For 2010, Steve Murray won first place for his man reading a book, Gary Berg won second place for his two men talking at the Blarney Pub, and Scott Mogren won third place for his trio of woodburned crappies. Thank you to everyone who voted for their favorite carving! You play an important role in helping us pick your favorite carving!

Additional photos by Wayne Hendrickson - Wayne Hendrickson took time to catch many of our exhibitors and visitors participating in this year's show. Thanks for your help Wayne, your photos are always great!
